Kitchen gifts by the kind of cook: ten picks for Christmas 2026
The right kitchen gift depends on how the person cooks. Here are ten picks, one each for the baker, the weeknight cook, the coffee drinker and seven more, with who each one suits, when to skip it and what to check first. The cook who roasts and grills ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE thermometer
A folding probe thermometer that gives a reading in one second or less. ThermoWorks rates it accurate to half a degree Fahrenheit between -4°F and 248°F. The display turns to face the cook however it is held and lights up in the dark, and it is rated to survive a rinse.
- Choose it if they cook roasts, steaks or chicken and still cut into the meat to check.
- Skip it if they already own a fast instant-read thermometer.
- Check first: ThermoWorks says it is saying goodbye to this model and selling off what is left, so it may sell out before Christmas. Its replacement, the Thermapen NANO, is already on sale on ThermoWorks's own site. On Amazon, make sure the seller is ThermoWorks. The maker warns about look-alikes there.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all named it, and so did Engadget. A cook in a Hungry Onion thread says a Thermapen they were given, a model with an infrared reader, gets used almost every day.
The baker KitchenAid Artisan 5-quart tilt-head stand mixer
A 5-quart stand mixer with ten speeds and a head that tilts back to add ingredients. It comes with a flat beater, a dough hook, a wire whip and a pouring shield, and the stainless steel bowl can go in the dishwasher.
- Choose it if they bake bread, cakes or cookies most weeks and mix by hand.
- Skip it if they already own a stand mixer, or have no counter or cupboard to keep one.
- Check first: whether they have one already, which is likely for a keen baker, and which color they would want. KitchenAid makes it in more than twenty, and ours is Empire Red.
Named by Claude and by Engadget.
The cook who braises and bakes bread Le Creuset Signature Round Dutch Oven, 5.5 quart
An enameled cast iron pot, made in France, that goes from any stovetop, induction included, into an oven up to 500°F. Le Creuset says it serves five to six. The pale interior makes it easy to see how the browning is going.
- Choose it if they make stews, braises or bread in a pot, and cook for more than two.
- Skip it if they already own a Dutch oven of about this size, or struggle with heavy pots.
- Check first: what they already own, and the color. This one is Cerise, a red. Le Creuset says it can go in the dishwasher but recommends washing it by hand.
Claude and Gemini both named it. In a Hungry Onion thread, a cook describes giving a different Le Creuset Dutch oven, an oval one, to a brother.
The cook setting up a first kitchen Victorinox Fibrox Pro 8-inch chef's knife
A Swiss-made chef's knife with a blade just under eight inches and a non-slip handle. Victorinox lists it as dishwasher safe.
- Choose it if they are cooking with a dull knife from a block set, or have just moved into a first place.
- Skip it if they already have a chef's knife they reach for first, or prefer a shorter blade.
- Check first: whether they already own a knife they like, and that they have somewhere safe to keep this one, such as a block, a sheath or a magnetic strip.
In a Reddit thread on knives, a cook who was given one names the Fibrox Pro and its 8-inch length.
The cook who loves a hard sear Lodge 10.25-inch cast iron skillet
A cast iron skillet that arrives seasoned. Lodge says it works on stovetops, in ovens, on grills and over campfires, and that it gets better with use.
- Choose it if they want a deep brown crust on a steak or a chicken thigh, or they cook outdoors.
- Skip it if they already have a cast iron skillet, or dislike heavy pans.
- Check first: cast iron is heavy. Lodge sells this skillet in many sizes; this is the 10.25-inch.

The household that eats rice most days Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy rice cooker, 5.5-cup (NS-ZCC10)
A rice cooker made in Japan with settings for white, sushi, brown and mixed rice and for porridge, a keep-warm mode, and a timer so the rice is ready at dinner. It cooks up to 5.5 cups of uncooked short- or medium-grain white rice, or four of brown, measured in the small cup that comes with it. That cup holds about 180 milliliters, less than a US measuring cup.
- Choose it if rice is on the table several nights a week.
- Skip it if they cook rice once a month, or have no counter space for another appliance.
- Check first: Zojirushi's own store showed it out of stock when we looked, so see that the Amazon listing is in stock and sold new. It also comes in a larger size.
Named by ChatGPT and by Popular Science. Owners in a Hacker News thread say they use a Zojirushi rice cooker daily.
The coffee drinker AeroPress Original coffee maker
A small press that makes up to 10 ounces at a time, one or two small cups, regular or espresso-style, hot or cold brew. AeroPress says brewing and cleaning take about two minutes. It comes with paper filters and a stirrer, and it can go on the top rack of the dishwasher.
- Choose it if they drink a cup or two a day and have little counter space, or want good coffee on a trip.
- Skip it if they make coffee for a crowd, or want it at the press of a button.
- Check first: it needs ground coffee, and a kettle for anything but cold brew. AeroPress also sells a travel version and a larger XL. This is the Original.

The cook who has everything Microplane Premium Classic zester grater
A long, narrow grater with a stainless steel blade made in the USA and a soft handle. It zests citrus and grates hard cheese such as Parmesan into fine wisps. It can go in the dishwasher and comes with a cover for the blade.
- Choose it if they cook a lot and their grater has gone dull, or they have never owned one.
- Skip it if they have a sharp one already. One is enough.
- Check first: whether they have one already. It comes in several colors, and the listing opens on black.
Named by ChatGPT. In a Hungry Onion thread, a cook suggests a Microplane as a stocking gift.
The weeknight cook Nordic Ware Naturals three-piece sheet pan set
A half sheet, a jelly roll pan and a quarter sheet in bare aluminum. The big one holds a whole sheet-pan dinner, and the small ones roast a side or reheat leftovers. They nest for storage.
- Choose it if dinner is often chicken and vegetables on one tray, and their pans are warped or stained.
- Skip it if they need pans that go in the dishwasher. Bare aluminum is best washed by hand.
- Check first: that the half sheet fits their oven and their cupboard. Nordic Ware sells other three-piece sets with a rack or a mat in place of a pan, so see that the listing shows three pans.

The messy cook Hedley & Bennett Essential apron
A cotton canvas apron with a chest pocket for a pen or a thermometer and two deep pockets at the lap. The neck strap adjusts, and it is machine washed cold.
- Choose it if they cook in good clothes, or bake with flour everywhere.
- Skip it if they never wear an apron and are not about to start.
- Check first: the neck strap adjusts, and Hedley & Bennett also makes a larger size. Some special-edition colors use a different fabric, so read the listing for the color you choose.

Where ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini agreed
On November 5, 2026 we asked ChatGPT (GPT-6), Claude (Opus 5.5) and Gemini (Gemini 4 Argon) the same question, each in a fresh chat with memory off: "What ten Christmas gifts would you recommend for someone who loves to cook this year?" We asked each for ten specific products, one for each of ten different kinds of cook. The question was about cooks, not kitchens, so their answers are nearly all cooking equipment. None of the three suggested a coffee maker or an apron.
Of the thirty suggestions, one product was on all three lists, the Thermapen ONE. None of the three mentioned that its maker is retiring it. Two named the Le Creuset 5.5-quart Dutch oven, two a Vitamix Explorian blender and two a Ninja Creami ice cream maker.
| Kind of cook | What they suggested |
|---|---|
| The cook who roasts and grills | The Thermapen ONE (all three) |
| The cook who makes soups and sauces | A blender (all three; two chose a Vitamix Explorian) |
| The pizza maker | A baking steel or a pizza oven (all three, three different products) |
| The cook who braises and bakes bread | A Le Creuset Dutch oven (two) or a cast iron bread pan (one) |
| The baker | A stand mixer (two, from different makers) or a scale (one) |
| The cook who cares about knives | A chef's knife (two, from different makers) or a sharpener (one) |
| The everyday or searing pan | A cast iron skillet, a carbon steel pan and a titanium pan (one each) |
Twelve of their thirty suggestions plug in. We kept ours to two appliances. Because we asked for different kinds of cook, some of the variety was built in, and agreement between assistants shows what they tend to suggest, not how good a product is. Six of our ten were named by at least one assistant.
What cooks in forum threads say they use
In the forum threads we read, cooks said the things they use constantly are plain ones: small hand tools such as a fine grater and a thermometer, a cast iron skillet, a Dutch oven. A stand mixer and a rice cooker were the appliances people said they keep. What sat unused were gadgets that do one job, and hand-crank pasta machines, which three people in one thread said they regretted. That is why there is no pasta machine here, and why most of these picks are things a cook reaches for every week.
Not sure what they already have?
Ask. Keen cooks tend to own the big things on this page already. A list they make themselves beats anyone's guess, and it still leaves you choosing what to buy. How to ask someone what they want for Christmas without spoiling the surprise has words you can borrow, and the button below sends them a link to make their own list.
